Galvanized water pipe replacement

Galvanized steel was the go-to service line for decades in DeKalb County. It narrows with rust from the inside, and once it starts leaking it rarely stops at one leak.

In short

Replacing an aging galvanized steel service line on the owner's side of the meter with modern pipe.

Why galvanized lines fail

The zinc coating on galvanized steel wears away over decades. Rust builds up inside, the pipe narrows, pressure drops and thin spots start to leak. DeKalb's notices put the typical life of these lines at 40 to 60 years.

How to check your line (DeKalb's tests)

DeKalb asks owners to look at the pipe where it is visible inside the home, usually near the main shutoff:

  • Galvanized: grey, threaded joints, and a magnet sticks to it.
  • Lead: dull grey, soft, scratches shiny silver, not magnetic, often bulges where it meets fittings.
  • Copper: penny-colored when scratched, not magnetic.
  • Plastic: smooth, usually white, black, blue or red.

You can report what you find through DeKalb's "Check Your Line" tool, or call the county's lead and copper line at 770-270-6243.

Lead lines

DeKalb says lead was commonly used for service lines until 1960, and Georgia banned it for water service in 1989. The county has said replacing the customer-owned portion is not required by law but can reduce lead exposure. If your line tests as lead, ask the county about its replacement plans before scheduling work.
